Visit the Farm

SPACE hosts residencies from June 1st through mid-October. Residencies are granted to groups and/or individuals we feel are in harmony with SPACE's mission. Priority in our selection process is given to groups or artists who have detailed and distinctive creative goals for their time at SPACE.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

WHAT DO WORKSHOPS LOOK LIKE?

At the heart of SPACE's mission is the desire to make each and every artist's stay at SPACE distinctive. The SPACE team will actively work with each visiting group to make their vision for their time on the farm a reality.

SPACE typically hosts two to three groups at the same time. One of the most exciting components of the experience at SPACE is the opportunity for artists to cross-pollinate with each other and act as sounding boards for each other’s work. Retreats culminate in informal showings or discussions based on what each group has explored during their time at SPACE.

IS THERE AN APPLICATION DEADLINE?

Applications for the 2012 season are closed. Please check back in the fall to apply for 2013.

HOW MUCH DO WORKSHOPS COST?

Each participant pays for their travel (a round trip off-peak ticket from Grand Central Station to Brewster is $24.50), as well as a minimal daily fee which covers the cost of food, housing, and SPACE facilitators, who will be on hand to assist, cook, clean, and supervise your stay. Fees vary per residency type and length of stay. Details will be discussed upon confirmation of acceptance as a resident at SPACE.

ARE THERE FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE?

For SPACE’s 2012 season, fellowship applications are by invitation only.

HOW DOES SPACE INTERACT WITH RYDER FARM?

SPACE is dedicated to the ongoing viability of both its resident artists and its home, Ryder Farm. As part of your SPACE residency, time will be dedicated to working either on the farm or on any of the ongoing capital improvements to the farm’s structures. Since its founding, SPACE resident artists and team members have made extensive renovations to The Sycamores (the 1790s Ryder family homestead) and the Corncrib, a rustic cottage that artist volunteers--lead by John Ryder--transformed into SPACE’s homebase. If farming is of interest, residents have the opportunity to assist with the harvesting of the farm’s organic produce, prepare produce for market, assemble flower bouquets, or till the land.

HOW LARGE CAN MY GROUP BE?

Groups can be anywhere from 1 to 10 participants.

WHAT ARE THE ACCOMMODATIONS LIKE?

The Ryder Family homestead, known as The Sycamores, is a beautiful house with an incredible history, dating back to the eighteenth century. It follows, however, that the accommodations are rustic. There will of course be hot water, bathrooms with showers and working plumbing, beds with clean linen, and a roof over your head, but if you consider yourself squeamish in a camping, outdoors style environment, SPACE is probably not the right place for you.

HOW LONG DO ARTISTS STAY?

Residencies at SPACE can be anywhere from 1 to 5 days.

HOW FAR AWAY FROM NYC IS SPACE, AND HOW DO I GET THERE?

Ryder Farm is approximately an hour's trip from midtown Manhattan (as easy as a Brooklyn to Upper West Side commute)! To get to the farm via Metro North, depart from Grand Central Station on the Harlem Line towards Southeast and get off in Brewster. Click Here to see train schedules. Driving is also an option!
